Latvia, Ukraine Launch AI Partnership to Support EU Accession Efforts
Ukraine and Latvia have agreed to deepen cooperation in artificial intelligence and language-technology development.
The Gaze reports this, referring to an announcement made by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Taras Kachka.
The two governments, together with Latvian AI industry partners, will work toward creating a unified national translation platform capable of processing EU legal material and supporting official communication.
The memorandum was signed in Riga by the Government Office for the Coordination of European and Euro-Atlantic Integration, Ukraine’s Ministry of Digital Transformation, the Latvian language-tech firm Tilde, and the National Artificial Intelligence Center of Latvia.
The signing ceremony took place under the chairmanship of Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braže and Deputy Prime Minister Taras Kachka.
The agreement outlines joint research and development of language models, collaboration in AI-based translation systems, and knowledge-exchange programs.
According to Kachka, Ukraine’s next two years of EU alignment will require not only legal harmonization but also technological tools capable of handling vast amounts of multilingual regulatory texts.
“The next 24 months are crucial. To meet European standards, we must not only adopt legislation but also introduce tools that strengthen our institutional capacity,” Kachka said.
He highlighted machine translation and document-processing systems as core instruments for accelerating integration.
A key requirement of the project is the preservation of authentic Ukrainian language use in official documentation. Kachka noted that Tilde’s technology already incorporates Ukrainian linguistic structures – including phraseology, morphology and stylistics – enabling high-quality translation that reflects natural language.
The move follows Kyiv’s broader effort to standardize Ukrainian toponyms and language usage internationally. Earlier this year, Germany’s Federal Foreign Office switched to the Ukrainian transcription Kyjiw in place of the previously common Kiew.
As The Gaze previously reported, Latvia expanded its support for Ukraine by contributing an additional €2.2 million to the NATO PURL (Prioritized Ukraine Requirement List) initiative, which finances the purchase of American weapons for the Ukrainian forces.
Additionally, during the visit of Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braže to Kyiv, Ukraine and Latvia agreed to expand their defense cooperation.
