Rome Plans New Government Decree to Continue Weapons Supplies to Kyiv
Italy plans to extend its authorization to supply military equipment to Ukraine, supporting it in its confrontation with Russian aggression.
The Gaze reports on it, referring to Reuters.
Since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022, Italy has already approved 12 military aid packages for Kyiv, including SAMP/T air defense systems.
The new government document indicates Rome's intention to continue supplying weapons without having to obtain parliamentary approval for each new delivery as it was previously required to do for one year.
Despite Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's staunch support, tensions are growing within her conservative coalition over the amount of aid to Ukraine. Some politicians, including Matteo Salvini, leader of the far-right League party, have expressed concerns that military aid may not end the war and could potentially contribute to corruption.
The final decision on extending the supply authorization is to be made by the government at a cabinet meeting, after which the document will be sent to parliament for approval within 60 days. The continuation of aid underscores Italy's strategic desire to support Ukraine in the military conflict and strengthen transatlantic cooperation.
On this same day, Italy officially approved the 12th package of military aid for Ukraine. This package includes the transfer of funds, materials, and military equipment prepared by the General Staff of the Armed Forces to Ukrainian government agencies, free of charge to the Ukrainian side. Details regarding the exact composition of the package remain confidential.
According to a previous report by The Gaze, the 12th package is to focus on ammunition and missiles for the SAMP/T air defense system, two units of which Italy has already transferred to Ukraine.
Since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Italy has provided up to €3 billion in military aid, demonstrating its steadfast support for Kyiv in its defense efforts.
As The Gaze informed earlier, Italian President Sergio Mattarella stressed the urgent need to create a joint European defense force in response to Russia's aggression against Ukraine.
