The Association of Small and Medium-Sized Businesses and the Economy of Germany (MIT) has named the people of Ukraine as this year’s laureates of its annual award in the Politics category, recognizing their resilience and commitment to defending freedom under Russia’s ongoing aggression.

The Gaze reports this, referring to MIT's announcement.

The award was presented during MIT’s 11th ceremony, attended by senior German officials, including Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, who delivered a keynote address praising Ukrainians for their steadfast resistance throughout more than 1,370 days of war.

Wadephul thanked Ukrainians for defending not only their own country, but also the security architecture of Europe as a whole.

“It is about achieving a just and above all lasting peace,” he said, stressing that decisions on the future of European and Ukrainian security must be made with Europe and Ukraine at the table, particularly regarding NATO and the EU.

The minister acknowledged uncertainty over when the war may end or whether an immediate and unconditional ceasefire is possible, noting that its prospects depend primarily on Russia, which, he said, has subjected Ukraine to violence for more than 11 years and continues to act as an aggressive, non-peaceful actor.

He emphasized that while the invasion is aimed directly at Ukraine, it also threatens the wider European order. “Putin’s imperial ambitions extend beyond Ukraine. This is a struggle for all of Europe – one in which we stand firmly with the Ukrainian people. We are their advocates in the world,” Wadephul stated.

German FM also noted that the war has already reshaped Europe and argued that the continent will emerge larger, stronger, and more aware of the value of freedom and courage. A post-war Europe, he said, must remain capable of defending itself from Russian aggression.

The event was also attended by Chancellor Friedrich Merz, leader of the CDU, who presented a special award to Queen Silvia of Sweden for her long-standing commitment to liberal values and social initiatives extending beyond her home country. MIT traditionally honors figures in business, politics, and civil society whose work strengthens freedom and the social market economy.

As The Gaze previously reported, Germany has announced a significant expansion of its military and humanitarian support for Ukraine, unveiling a fresh €150 million contribution to the PURL mechanism.

Beyond military aid, Germany has committed another €40 million in emergency winter assistance. The funds will support repairs of damaged homes and heating systems, provide generators, and deliver essential supplies such as blankets and hygiene kits, amid renewed Russian strikes on Ukraine’s energy grid.
