15 Drones Spotted Over Belgium, EU Urged to Build "Drone Wall"

The incident involving the appearance of around 15 unknown drones over a Belgian military base has intensified calls for the creation of a joint “drone wall” to protect it.

An investigation has been launched in Belgium after about 15 drones were spotted on Thursday evening over the Elsenborn military base near the border with Germany.

The Belgian Ministry of Defense confirmed that the origin of the drones and who was controlling them remains unknown. However, media reports say that they continued flying in the direction of Germany.

The incident occurred amid a wave of disruptions in European airspace caused by the appearance of drones. A similar incident occurred in Germany that same evening. Munich Airport had to be temporarily shut down due to a drone sighting. As a result, 17 flights were canceled and about 3,000 passengers were affected by delays.

Meanwhile, Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder called for the police to be given the right to shoot down drones immediately, stressing the need to pass a corresponding law at the federal state level.

In response to the appearance of unknown drones in Belgium, the EU once again stated the need to create a “drone wall” that would protect the entire European Union.

European Commission spokesman Thomas Renier said that the entire European Union is under threat.

Rengier noted that the new drone incursion into the EU “once again underscores what the president and European Commissioner Kubilius said in Denmark: a ‘drone wall’ is needed to protect the entire European Union.”
