As Canada gears up for parliamentary elections on April 28, political parties are making clear their commitments to continue supporting Ukraine amidst the ongoing conflict with Russia. The ruling Liberal Party has pledged to maintain and potentially increase military assistance to Kyiv, while the opposition Conservative Party has promised to transfer $16 billion in frozen Russian assets to Ukraine if they win.

The Gaze reports on this with reference to a broadcast on the FREEdom TV channel.

Pierre Poilievre, leader of the Conservative Party, highlighted his party's unwavering support for Ukraine since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion. He asserted that, as Prime Minister, he would allocate these frozen funds to bolster Ukraine's defense against Russian aggression and assist in the country's reconstruction.

The Conservative Party has criticized the Liberals for hindering Canadian natural gas exports to Europe. "Right now, Vladimir Putin has a monopoly on the European energy market because, frankly speaking, the liberals have blocked the export of Canadian natural gas from the Atlantic coast; they have blocked several projects," stated Poilievre. The Conservative Party Leader also promised to expedite the approval process for natural gas projects to enhance national security and reduce Europe’s reliance on Russian energy.

The Liberals, in turn, highlighted past Conservative opposition to initiatives like military training for Ukrainian forces and free trade with Kyiv. Since the full-scale invasion began, the Liberal government has provided over $13.5 billion in support, including $4.5 billion in military aid. That aid has included M777 howitzers, air defense missiles, Leopard tanks, and a NASAMS air defense system worth $300 million sent just last year.

Prime Minister Mark Carney emphasized that Canada’s role in global security is evolving. He pledged to raise defense spending to 2% of GDP by 2030 and deepen cooperation with European allies through initiatives like the “ReArm Europe” program.

No matter the election outcome, Canada appears resolute in maintaining its support for Ukraine and countering global authoritarian threats.

Previously to the broadcast on the FREEdom TV channel, Ihor Popov, an expert from the analytical center United Ukraine, discussed Canada's preparations for parliamentary elections and their potential implications for Ukraine.
