The Group of Seven (G7) energy ministers on Friday condemned Russia’s ongoing strikes against Ukraine’s power grid and reaffirmed their determination to help Kyiv rebuild and secure its energy infrastructure ahead of winter.

The Gaze reports this, referring to a joint statement published by the Canadian government.

The G7 denounced the attacks as “devastating” for Ukraine’s population, citing their severe social, environmental, and economic consequences.

“We condemn Russia’s direct attacks on Ukraine’s energy system, which continue to inflict devastating social, environmental, and economic consequences on the Ukrainian people, severely impacting the most vulnerable. Russia’s recent attacks on Ukraine’s natural gas infrastructure have created risks to communities and human lives, weakening civilian infrastructure and the energy security of the Ukrainian people,” the statement reads.

The ministers pledged coordinated efforts to meet Ukraine’s energy needs and support the repair of critical facilities through the G7+ Energy Coordination Group for Ukraine and the Ukraine Energy Support Fund, in close cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

According to the statement, the G7 will continue to back the recovery of Ukraine’s energy sector through direct financial aid, credit lines, risk insurance, and policy coordination – all aimed at fostering long-term private-sector investment.

The group also reiterated its commitment to intensifying restrictions on Russia’s “shadow fleet” of oil tankers to curb the Kremlin’s war revenues.

Earlier, Canada announced the accelerated disbursement of the final $70 million tranche of its contribution to the Ukraine Energy Support Fund to strengthen the country’s resilience ahead of winter.

In particular, $10 million was paid ahead of schedule to help repair critical energy infrastructure damaged by Russian attacks.

Canadian Defence Minister Anita Anand said that, in response to the latest wave of strikes on gas facilities, the Energy Community Secretariat allocated about $50 million from Canada’s total contribution for the purchase and delivery of gas compressors to the Kharkiv region.

As The Gaze reported earlier, Ukraine discusses strengthening defense and energy security with European partners during a meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council in Luxembourg on October 20.
