EU ‘Deeply Concerned’ About DPRK Troops in Russia, Will Coordinate With Partners
The European Union has stated that it will consider the participation of North Korean troops in Russia's aggressive war against Ukraine as a ‘serious violation’ of international laws, including the most fundamental principles of the UN Charter.
This was stated by the EU High Representative, the Council of Europe website reports.
‘The European Union is deeply concerned by reports that the DPRK is sending troops to participate in Russia's illegal aggressive war against Ukraine. This would be a unilateral hostile act by the DPRK with serious consequences for European and global peace and security. This event also demonstrates once again how Russia is spreading instability and rising tensions in the region and around the world,’ the statement said.
It also emphasises that North Korea's support for Russia's illegal war of aggression against Ukraine shows ‘how closely European security is linked to the security of the Indo-Pacific region’.
‘The European Union will coordinate with partners in this regard, including responses,’ the document concludes.
The EU statement was released on 24 October amid signs that North Korean military personnel are in Russia.
As The Gaze previously reported, last week South Korean intelligence reported that North Korea sent about 1,500 soldiers to Russia between 8 and 13 October. This week, another 1,500 troops were reportedly sent.
Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin confirmed the reports, adding that North Korean soldiers could soon be fighting alongside Russian troops in Ukraine.
