European Court to Rule on Major Ukraine-Netherlands Case Against Russia on July 9

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has announced it will deliver a long-anticipated ruling in the case Ukraine and the Netherlands v. Russia on 9 July 2025.
The decision, which will come from the Grand Chamber, is expected to set a major legal precedent regarding Russia’s human rights violations during its occupation of eastern Ukraine and the full-scale invasion launched in February 2022.
The Gaze reports on this, citing the announcement published on the official ECHR website.
The inter-state case consolidates four major applications filed by Ukraine and the Netherlands, covering a range of egregious human rights abuses.
These include Russia’s military aggression in Donbas since 2014, the downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17, the forced transfer of Ukrainian children to Russian territory, and violations committed during the 2022 invasion.
According to Ukraine’s ECHR Commissioner, Margarita Sokorenko, this case represents a critical legal battle between Ukraine and the aggressor state.
She emphasized that the Ministry of Justice team has worked tirelessly for years to document and present evidence.
This is one of the most consequential inter-state cases in the Court’s history. A total of 26 states and one international organization have joined as third-party interveners, underscoring the case’s global significance.
“The upcoming decision will be a cornerstone not only in legal terms but also for the millions affected by Russian aggression. In a world flooded with misinformation, this ruling will stand as a voice of truth and a beacon of justice,” Sokorenko stated.
