DTEK, together with the American company Fluence, is launching one of the largest energy storage systems in Eastern Europe, which should strengthen the Ukrainian energy system, The Gaze reports, citing DTEK

It is noted that the 200 MW energy project at six locations is entering the final stage of implementation, which includes the launch of systems, their testing and initial discharge of batteries. Commercial operation and service provision under the contract with Ukrenergo is expected to begin in October 2025.

“In total, the system will be able to store 400 MWh of electricity, enough to provide electricity to 600,000 Ukrainian homes for two hours,” the statement reads.

The project was presented during the Ukraine Recovery Conference in Rome and became the first large-scale energy project after the conclusion of the Economic Partnership Agreement between Ukraine and the United States in April this year.

DTEK reports that once fully operational, the system will provide frequency and power balancing services that will strengthen the Ukrainian grid, especially in case of accidents, and reduce the need for stabilization outages that harm both the public and businesses.

Due to military restrictions and challenging logistics in Ukraine, this project was the first to be commissioned by Fluence entirely remotely. “The remote commissioning format we have introduced ensures continuity of operations in the face of travel restrictions, and allows us to scale future projects faster," stated Julian Nebreda, CEO of Fluence.

As part of its implementation, 20 Ukrainian power engineers and technicians received in-depth training at Fluence's facilities in Germany and Finland. This prepared them for safe and autonomous management of energy storage systems, rapid response to emergencies, and quick troubleshooting.

It is noted that Fluence will continue to remotely support the project by diagnosing, testing, and monitoring its operation to ensure stable and safe operation in war conditions.
