French President Macron Delays Appointment of New Government and Prime Minister Until After Olympics

French President Emmanuel Macron, following his recent call for a ‘political truce’ during the Olympics, said that his previous government will remain in place until mid-August, and he will not appoint a new government or a new prime minister because of the Olympics. This was reported by BFMTV.

‘Obviously, until mid-August, we have to focus on the Games, and then, depending on the progress of these discussions, I will be responsible for appointing a prime minister or instructing the prime minister to form a government and have the broadest possible composition that will allow it to act and have stability,’ Macron said.

Macron also rejected an attempt by the left-wing alliance to appoint a prime minister.

France's left-wing New Popular Front coalition, which won the most seats in parliament in this month's elections, proposed financial crime specialist Lucie Caste as its candidate for prime minister just an hour before Macron's TV interview.

According to Macron, France is ‘not in a position to change anything’ ahead of the Paris Olympics. The French president also stressed the importance of the majority ‘that can emerge in the Assembly’ rather than the name of the candidate for the post of prime minister, putting the ‘responsibility for finding compromises’ on parliamentary groups.

The French President stressed that it would be wrong to say that the New Popular Front (NFP) has a majority, referring to the defeat of André Chassaigne in the vote for the post of president of the National Assembly.
