Is the G7 Losing Focus on Ukraine? Summit Reveals Growing Divides

The 2025 G7 Summit in Canada reflected the global shift toward a multipolar world but also exposed deep disagreements among world leaders, culminating in a symbolic moment when U.S. President Donald Trump left the summit early amid rising tensions in the Middle East.
According to Anton Kuchukhidze, political scientist and foreign policy analyst at the “United Ukraine” Think Tank, in his recent article for The Gaze, this year’s gathering “highlighted the transition to a multipolar world” but was ultimately marred by “differences among participants and Donald Trump’s demarche,” which hindered progress on key issues such as support for Ukraine.
Kuchukhidze notes that the expanded participation of leaders from the Global South — including India, South Korea, Mexico, and Ukraine — was a signal of the G7’s attempt to become more inclusive. However, he stresses that “no concrete results were achieved,” showing how difficult it is to build consensus in a world where power is increasingly decentralized.
While the summit’s agenda aimed to cover ambitious topics — from international security and economic stability to climate action and digital transformation — internal divisions among participants diluted the impact. Kuchukhidze highlights that “the summit did not end with the adoption of significant joint decisions,” despite growing geopolitical crises.
Perhaps most concerning for Kyiv, the analyst emphasizes that “the issue of the Russian-Ukrainian war received less attention, which posed a challenge for Ukrainian diplomacy.”
President Trump’s early exit, combined with his decision to skip a scheduled meeting with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, signaled a diplomatic setback. His statements defending Russia’s right to return to the G7 and criticizing its expulsion in 2014 added to concerns among allies about Washington’s shifting stance under his leadership.
Kuchukhidze warns that this moment may reflect a broader trend of U.S. disengagement from multilateral efforts. “Trump’s emphasis on unilateral decisions and his praise of Russia unsettled many of the G7 leaders,” he says, noting that this posture complicates unified action on global crises.
For Ukraine, the summit served as a wake-up call. As Kuchukhidze puts it, “the growing multipolarity of the world requires the G7 to be flexible and open to inclusive dialogue, but it also creates challenges for countries that depend on the support of this club.”
