Massive Cyberattack Paralyzes Russia’s Busiest Airport

A major cyberattack has caused chaos at Sheremetyevo International Airport — the largest airport in Russia — severely disrupting operations and potentially inflicting massive losses on the national airline Aeroflot, The Gaze reports, citing Unian.
According to aviation market expert Bohdan Dolintse, the damage includes the destruction of approximately 7,000 servers and dozens of terabytes of data. As a result, Aeroflot could face direct financial losses amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars, with total damages potentially reaching into the billions of rubles.
The attack has already led to flight delays lasting several days. Dolintse notes that while operations won’t be entirely suspended, recovery could take up to six months. Even temporary disruptions of 4–6 hours can cost up to $20 million, and longer delays could push losses beyond $250 million.
In addition to financial damage, Aeroflot now faces a serious reputational crisis, especially if passenger data has been compromised. “This includes sensitive travel details of passengers, and such a breach could have long-term consequences,” Dolintse emphasized.
Sheremetyevo Airport is one of four major airports serving Moscow and is the top airport in Russia by passenger volume.
