New Greenlandic PM Says US Will Not Get the Island
The new Prime Minister of Greenland, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, has said that US President Donald Trump will not be able to get the island, LBC reports.
‘President Trump says that the United States is getting Greenland. Let me be clear: The United States won't get that. We do not belong to anyone else. We determine our own future’ Nielsen wrote on Facebook.
He stressed that it is important to calmly convey to Trump that Greenland belongs to its people.
‘We must not act out of fear. We must respond with peace, dignity and unity. And it is through these values that we must show the American president clearly, clearly and calmly that Greenland is ours. That was the case yesterday. It is so today. And so it will be in the future,’ Nielsen added.
As The Gaze reported, in a recent interview with NBC News, Trump expressed confidence that the United States will eventually gain control of Greenland, currently a semi-autonomous territory under Denmark.
US President Donald Trump insists that Greenland should come under US jurisdiction as soon as possible and does not even deny the possibility of using force to do so. There is a US military base on the island, which the Vance couple recently visited, despite the protests of Denmark and the locals themselves.
Greenland belongs to the Kingdom of Denmark. About 57,000 people live on the world's largest island. In addition to its strategic security importance, the territory is rich in valuable minerals.
