Putin Cannot Be Trusted, Ukraine Needs Reliable Security Guarantees, Says Kallas
Next week, EU defence and foreign ministers will discuss security guarantees for Ukraine and sanctions pressure on Russia, while reiterating that Russian President Vladimir Putin cannot be trusted.
The Gaze reports on this, referring to a post by EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas on social media platform X.
‘Putin cannot be trusted to honour any promise or commitment,’ Kallas stressed.
In this regard, the top diplomat believes that security guarantees for Ukraine must be ‘strong and credible enough to deter Russia from re-grouping and re-attacking.’
She added that the EU will contribute to these security guarantees, in particular by training Ukrainian military personnel and strengthening Ukraine's armed forces and defence industry.
The EU will also continue to ‘target’ Russia's military economy, she stressed, noting that ‘the next package of sanctions against Moscow should be ready by next month.’
‘I have put these issues at the top of the agenda for discussion next week at the level of EU foreign and defence ministers,’ Kallas concluded.
On 19 August, members of the European Council discussed via videoconference the results of yesterday's meetings in Washington aimed at achieving a lasting and just peace in Ukraine. A virtual meeting of the Coalition of the Willing was also held today.
