Rome’s Famous Trevi Fountain Reopens After Restoration: Tourist Access to Be Limited
Rome's famous Trevi Fountain was inaugurated by Rome's Mayor Roberto Gualtieri the day before, after extraordinary renovations to mark the anniversary of the monument.
The work, which lasted about three months and cost 327 thousand euros, allowed the famous monument to return to its original beauty through a thorough cleaning that enhanced the colours of the marble. The maintenance included restoration work necessary to preserve the integrity of the fountain and protect it from damage caused by wear and tear and the negligence of visitors.
The monument will now be accessed via the central staircase and exited through the gate from Via dei Crossiferi. In the future, the entrance will be restricted to visitors. This decision was made after an experiment with managing the flow of people at a temporary pedestrian crossing erected during the works to allow visitors to admire the monument.
It was decided to limit the space around the fountain, which is located under the stairs, to a maximum of 400 people.
‘Zetema employees will manage the entrance, you enter from one side and exit from the other, with no time limit,’ explained Rome's Mayor Roberto Gualtieri during the opening.
‘The goal is to allow everyone to enjoy the monument without crowds. We will assess whether 400 people is the right number, and if necessary, we will adjust it,’ he concluded.
Special reception and security staff will be present at the entrance, exit and inside the monument.
Visitors will be able to move freely around the fountain's basin, but they will not be allowed to sit on the edge of the basin, eat, drink or smoke.
Visiting will be regulated as follows: daily from 9.00 to 21.00 (last access at 20.30); on Mondays and Fridays from 11.00 to collect coins; every Monday from 14.00 to 21.00 to empty and clean the tank. Free access from 21:00.
The information stands at the entrance and on the totems on the sides of the square have a qr-code that allows visitors to get historical information about the fountain.
