Russia aims at requesting UN meetings and using their permanent UNSC seat and veto power to legitimize Kremlin narratives on a global stage and stop the world from supporting Ukraine, FreeDom reports with reference to the ISW.

On January 22, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov spoke at a UNSC meeting, convened by Russia, and accused the West of rejecting negotiations while they are “have been always ready for negotiations.”

Lavrov then proceeded to explain that Russia will take part in negotiations only if the current Ukrainian government will be removed. The report notes this as a proof that Russia still officially seeks regime change in Ukraine. Lavrov once again denied Ukraine’s independence and sovereignty, claiming it’s the West that has been pushing Ukraine to continue the war, not the people of Ukraine resisting the aggressor.

“Lavrov denied Russia’s responsibility for fears that Russia may attack NATO in the future, ignoring the recent Kremlin official statements that have prompted those fears. Lavrov falsely claimed that the West promotes the idea that Russia will attack the Baltic States, Poland, and Finland in the future as a way to “extort money” from Western states for aid to Ukraine,” says the ISW report.

Kremlin officials, however, have been publicly threatening NATO member states, frequently mentioning nuke options in particular.

Lavrov added that “Russians and Ukrainians will live exactly like brothers and good neighbours” after Russia fulfils the purpose of the war in Ukraine, which ISW sees as full Ukrainian and Western surrender.

Lavrov’s speech about fraternity was followed by the morning Russia’s attack on Kyiv and Kharkiv on January 23, 2024 and at least 6 dead.

As The Gaze previously wrote, in early January, the United States convened a meeting of the UN Security Council over Russia's use of DPRK missiles during massive night strikes on Ukraine.
