Thousands of People Evacuated in Italy Due to Devastating Floods
At least 3,000 people have been evacuated as a result of devastating floods in the northern Italian region of Emilia-Romagna.
This is reported by ANSA.
On Monday, most of the region remained flooded as a result of floods.
The natural disaster led to widespread destruction this weekend and caused huge losses. In the town of Pianoro, a 20-year-old man was killed when his car was washed away.
This is reportedly the fourth wave of devastating floods caused by extreme weather conditions to hit Emilia-Romagna in less than a year and a half.
Floods also occurred in other parts of Italy, especially in the provinces of Mantua and Cremona in Lombardy, as well as in Sicily and Calabria. The city of Maida was cut off after the river burst its banks.
Scientists say that the climate crisis caused by human greenhouse gas emissions is making extreme weather events such as heat waves, droughts, severe storms and floods more frequent and intense.
While there are many sources of greenhouse gases that cause global warming, the burning of fossil fuels such as oil, gas and coal is a major contributor.
As The Gaze previously reported, heavy rains and flooding claimed at least 17 lives in Central and Eastern Europe in September.
