Gas Transmission System Operator of Ukraine (GTSOU) plans to build the first hydrogen pipeline infrastructure facility in Ukraine.

The Gaze reports on it, referring to a press release from the Gas Transmission System Operator of Ukraine.

During a roundtable discussion organized by the UN Global Compact in Ukraine as part of the Ukrainian Energy Initiative, Alexander Gaidin, Head of Strategy at GTSOU, spoke about the need to take into account European hydrogen regulations when developing Ukraine's hydrogen infrastructure.

In addition, Haidin spoke about plans to develop hydrogen production and transportation in Ukraine.

“Our long-term ambition is to create a nationwide hydrogen transportation network. The company takes into account a number of safety factors and commercial considerations – the priority is the demand for access to the developed EU market,” he said.

The GTSOU representative also noted the need to take into account EU regulations, in particular the Directives establishing rules for the functioning of the hydrogen market, requirements for hydrogen pipeline system operators, and emphasized the need to use clean hydrogen.

It is reported that the first such hydrogen pipeline infrastructure facility in Ukraine will most likely be one of the international connectors, with further deployment along the Central European Hydrogen Corridor route through the Carpathian Mountains to the junction point of many main gas pipelines in western Ukraine. This should become a “gateway” for the export of Ukrainian hydrogen to the EU.

The GTSOU is also actively developing the hydrogen market in cooperation with international partners. Together with the TSO operators of Slovakia (EUSTREAM), the Czech Republic (NET4GAS), and Germany (OGE), the Central European Hydrogen Corridor project is being implemented, which in 2023 was included in the European Commission's list of projects of common and mutual interest and provides for the transportation of renewable hydrogen from Ukraine to EU countries.

On January 1, 2025, another initiative was launched — the Ukraine-EU Hydrogen Corridor project, which covers the entire value chain: production, transportation, and consumption of hydrogen.
