Ukrainian Film ‘Cuba & Alaska’ Triumphs at Scotland Documentary Festival
The Ukrainian documentary “Cuba & Alaska,” directed by Yehor Troianovskyi, has received the Jury Award at the Central Scotland Documentary Festival (CSDF) in Stirling.
The Gaze reports this, referring to Suspilne.
The film continues its strong run on the international festival circuit, bringing global recognition to Ukrainian documentary cinema.
“Cuba & Alaska” follows two Ukrainian paramedics, Yuliia Sidorova and Oleksandra Lysytska – call-signs Cuba and Alaska – who risk their lives on the frontlines to save others.
Their story is one of courage, friendship, and resilience, showing how even in the darkest moments of war, humanity and hope endure.
The film had its world premiere earlier this year at the prestigious Sheffield DocFest in the United Kingdom, where it was selected for the international competition program.
Since then, it has been screened at major European festivals in Munich, Brussels, and Rome, earning multiple awards including the Jury and Audience Choice prizes, as well as Best Documentary Film at the Rome International Film Festival (Festa del Cinema di Roma).
Critics have praised the film for its emotional depth and authentic portrayal of women’s experiences in war.
“Cuba & Alaska” stands as a testament to Ukrainian filmmakers’ growing presence on the global stage – and to the indomitable spirit of those whose stories they tell.
As The Gaze previously reported, the Ukrainian short film “Soldier” directed by Danylo Dedkov has won the award for Best Short Film at the 3rd International Ukrainian Film Festival PTAKH in the United Kingdom – an event dedicated to showcasing films by Ukrainians and stories about Ukraine to British and international audiences.
