Ukrainian Play about War ‘BLOCKPOST’ Premieres in Romania
The German State Theatre in the Romanian city of Timisoara hosted the premiere of BLOCKPOST, the first play about the events of 24 February 2022 in Ukraine. This was reported by the Ministry of Culture and Strategic Communications of Ukraine.
The play by Anton Nesmiyanov was directed by Oleksandr Stepantsov of the Lesya Ukrainka National Academic Drama Theatre during Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. It was performed by the theatre's team with the support of production designer Lena Drobna and students from the Faculty of Music and Theatre at the Universitatea de Vest din Timişoara (UVT).
The event took place thanks to the initiative of Fundatia Artmedia and Faina UA as part of the Romanian-Ukrainian theatre project Sunlight Over Borders.
According to the ICSC, the Sunlight Over Borders project enables European audiences to better understand the tragedy unfolding in Ukraine and opens up space for dialogue between Ukrainian and Romanian artists.
As part of the project, public debates were held, and on 5 November, a roundtable discussion entitled ‘Theatre as a Bridge: From Cultural Restoration to International Cooperation’ was held in Timisoara with the participation of leading theatre figures from Ukraine and Romania.
‘This is another step towards deeper integration of cultural ties between Ukraine and Europe, which gives contemporary Ukrainian drama a voice on the international stage,’ the ministry said.
