50 Delegations Confirm Participation in Ukraine Peace Summit in Switzerland
As of today, 50 delegations out of 160 invited by Switzerland have confirmed their participation in the Global Peace Summit on Ukraine to be held in mid-June. Among them are President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and President of the European Council Charles Michel, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Prime Minister of Italy Giorgia Meloni, Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau and President of France Emmanuel Macron.
This was reported by Swissinfo.
The Swiss Ministry of Foreign Affairs says it is satisfied with the answers, but expects more.
"There are big European countries there, but we would also like to have as many countries from the South as possible, because we want an open discussion about all the possibilities and thoughts on peace in Ukraine. That's why we want to have a number, but also a North-South representation," said Nicolas Bideau, head of communications at the Swiss Foreign Ministry.
"We did not invite Russia, because it keeps saying that it is not interested," Bideau added.
In addition to diplomatic aspects, the talks on Ukraine pose a serious security challenge.
The Federal Police (Fedpol) and the police of four cantons will take part in the talks in Burgenstock: Nidwalden, Obwalden, Zurich and Lucerne. The army is also likely to participate, but this is yet to be discussed in the Federal Council.
There are no specifics yet on the possible presence of US President Joe Biden at the conference in Switzerland. There has been no official announcement yet. However, the G7 leaders' meeting in Italy takes place from 13 to 15 June and ends just a few hours before the conference in Switzerland.
The Ukraine peace summit will take place on 15 and 16 June at the five-star Bürgenstock Hotel by the Lake in Lucerne, central Switzerland.
