This year, the best pizza was recognised not in Italy, but in the United States of America - Una Pizza Napoletana, a pizzeria in New York, won. The restaurant was opened by pizza chef Anthony Mangieri in March 2022.

This was reported by CNN with reference to the Italian 50 Top Pizza Awards.

‘It's inspiring to be recognised after 30 years of my career, especially in Naples, where pizza was born,’ Mangieri said.

The man grew up in New Jersey and became passionate about pizza at a young age. In search of the ‘perfect’ pizza, Anthony visited many famous restaurants in different US states with his mother.

Mangieri prepares pizza ‘with natural sourdough, cooked with wood-fired oven, the best San Marzano tomatoes, wild oregano from Amalfi, mozzarella and Sicilian sea salt. He decided to open only one location to be able to focus on every detail.

‘What makes us different is that our dough is naturally fermented, moist, never refrigerated, and made from a mixture of different Italian flours. I make the dough every day when we are open,’ explained Anthony Mangieri.

However, Italian pizza is not lagging behind. The second place was shared by Diego Vitagliano Pizzeria in Naples and Francesco Martucci in Caserta I Masanielli.

The Pizza Bar On 38th, a pizzeria in the Japanese capital Tokyo, rounds out the top three.

Other establishments were also highly rated:

  • Confine pizzeria in Milan (Italy) took the fourth place;
  • Napoli On The Road, opened by Michele Pascarella in London (UK), took the fifth place;
  • sixth - Tony's Pizza Napoletana in San Francisco (California, USA), owned by Tony Gemigliani;
  • seventh - I Tigli pizzeria from the Italian city of San Bonifacio;
  • eighth - Sartoria Panatieri from Barcelona (Spain);
  • 50 Kalò from Naples, Italy, is in ninth place;
  • Seu Pizza Illuminati from Rome rounds out the top ten.

Although Italy did not become this year's leader, the list includes 41 Italian establishments. This is the largest number of representatives from one country. There are fewer recognised pizzerias from the USA - only 15.

In general, the list includes pizzerias from such countries as Brazil, the Philippines, Austria, Bolivia, Poland, Spain, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, Chile, South Korea, China, India and others. Ukraine is not on the list.

The 50 Top Pizza Awards is an independent online guide with 50 inspectors who evaluate pizzerias through anonymous reviews. They visit pizzerias incognito, pay the bill and leave.
