British Financier Jacob Rothschild - Head of Europe's Most Prominent Banking Dynasty - Passes Away
At the age of 87, British financier and banker Nathaniel Charles Jacob Rothschild, the 4th Baron Rothschild, has passed away. Relatives declined to provide journalists with details regarding the location and time of the funeral, stating only that he would be buried according to Jewish custom in a small family ceremony. The causes of the financier's death are also undisclosed, as reported by The Guardian.
"Our father Jacob was an outstanding figure in the lives of many - a brilliant financier, advocate of arts and culture, dedicated public servant, passionate philanthropist, ardent environmentalist, and beloved friend, father, and grandfather," said a statement from the late Rothschild's family.
Jacob Rothschild began his career at the Rothschild family bank, NM Rothschild & Sons, in 1963. In 1980, he, along with Sir Mark Weinberg, co-founded J Rothschild Assurance Group, now known as St James's Place. He also established Windmill Hill Asset Management to manage the family's charitable portfolio.
Throughout his career, Rothschild held numerous high-profile positions, serving as Deputy Chairman of telecommunications company BSkyB and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the National Gallery. From 1988 to 2019, he chaired RIT Capital Partners, one of the largest investment funds listed on the London Stock Exchange.
It is worth noting that Jacob Rothschild was also known for his significant contributions to philanthropy in the United Kingdom. In 2020, he was recognized for his services to the Duchy of Cornwall and awarded the Commander of the Royal Victorian Order. He was also actively involved in the restoration of Somerset House in London and was awarded the Order of Merit in 2002 for outstanding services to the fields of arts, literature, education, and science.
"He maximized the privileges he was born into, making a huge contribution to Britain's cultural and commercial life. Intelligent, inquisitive, full of new projects, and with a dry sense of humor. He will be sorely missed," said former Chancellor George Osborne, now Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the British Museum.
The Rothschilds are an international dynasty of entrepreneurs and a financial-industrial group. The dynasty was founded by Mayer Amschel Rothschild, who established a bank in Frankfurt-am-Main. Its main activities were in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Later, his business was continued by his five sons, and then his grandchildren.
