Constanța’s Kogălniceanu Base in Romania Set to Become Europe’s Biggest NATO Hub

The Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base in Constanța, Romania, could double the number of NATO troops to 20,000 and become a key strategic hub in Europe, as well as a center for storing and transferring military aid to Ukraine.
The Gaze reports on it, referring to Digi24.
The Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base is planned to become a key strategic point for NATO in Europe. According to new data, its capacity allows it to accommodate up to 20,000 soldiers, which is twice as many as initially reported by official sources.
It is expected that these additional 10,000 soldiers will be temporarily stationed there.
“These troops could be deployed for several months if Russia does not respect a possible peace or if it threatens a NATO country,” the report says.
In addition to the military contingent, the airbase will play an important role in supporting Ukraine. It is planned to store and transfer military aid, including missiles, ammunition, and armored vehicles, when delivery routes are safe. Thus, Kogălniceanu will become one of the largest logistics and support centers for Ukraine in Europe.
The modernization of the airbase is part of a large-scale Romanian project costing around €2.5 billion. Romania plans to receive part of the funding — around €400 million — from European Commission funds.
If all plans are implemented, by 2040 the base could become the largest in Europe, surpassing even the Ramstein base in Germany.
As The Gaze reported earlier, Romania has reiterated its commitment to supporting NATO’s collective defense efforts while firmly ruling out the deployment of its troops on Ukrainian territory.
