Cultural Diplomacy in France: Exhibition of Ukrainian Icons and Auction to Restore Chernihiv Art Museum
An exhibition of ancient Ukrainian icons from the Khanenko Museum and a charity auction of works by artists from 10 countries are taking place in France to raise funds for the restoration of the Chernihiv Art Museum in Ukraine.
The charity auction will take place today, 24 September at 17:00 in the Don't Take Fake space thanks to the generosity of many artists and their galleries and in partnership with the Tajan | Ventes aux enchères (MOT Project) team. The funds raised will be used to restore the Chernihiv Art Museum in Ukraine.
The exhibition Icons from Ukraine, which features ancient icons from the Khanenko Museum, is being held at the Louvre-Lens Art Museum in the French city of Lens. The Embassy of Ukraine in France reported on Facebook.
The exhibition, curated by Maximilien Durand, features four of these rare icons, illustrating the combination of Western influences with the 17th-century Byzantine tradition, including works by the Cretan artist Theodoros Poulakis. The exhibition of icons will last until next year.
With the support of the Ministry of Culture and Strategic Communications of Ukraine and the International Alliance for the Protection of Heritage in Conflict Zones (Aliph), 16 ancient Ukrainian icons left their home museum for a temporary exhibition in France during the war.
In February 2022, the Louvre and the Khanenko Museum joined forces to rescue the outstanding Ukrainian works.
