EU Extends Mandate of Military Training Mission for Ukraine for Two More Years
The Council of the European Union has extended the mandate of the European Union Military Assistance Mission Ukraine (EUMAM Ukraine) for the next two years and allocated €409 million for its support. This is reported on the EU Council website.
‘The Council of the European Union has today decided to extend the mandate of the European Union's Assistance Military Mission to Ukraine (EUMAM Ukraine) for the next two years, until 15 November 2026, with a budget of around €409 million for the period from 14 November 2024 to 15 November 2026,’ the statement said.
As noted, EUMAM Ukraine remains the EU's key instrument for providing military support to Ukraine and has the main task of developing the military capabilities of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
According to the decision taken today, EUMAM Ukraine will cooperate with NATO, in particular with the command of the NATO Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine (NSATU), with which it will exchange information as part of its activities ‘in a transparent and inclusive manner, on the basis of equality’.
The report notes that the tasks of EUMAM Ukraine will be constantly updated in accordance with the needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and in coordination with international partners. Providing such training for the Ukrainian military is one of the areas of cooperation under the joint security commitments signed between the EU and Ukraine in June 2024.
On 17 October 2022, the Council of the EU decided to establish EUMAM Ukraine for a two-year period to help Ukraine fight Russian invasion, to contribute to the development of Ukraine's military capabilities and to support its efforts to defend its independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders.
To date, EUMAM Ukraine has trained 63,000 members of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Over the coming months, the mission is expected to train around 15,000 more Ukrainian troops.
