US President Donald Trump has stated that the United States is ready to play a role in ensuring security as part of a potential peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia. He said this during a conversation with journalists, responding to a question about Washington's transatlantic commitments.
According to Trump, Washington is ready to provide support — in particular, aviation and intelligence — if the parties reach an agreement.
‘Yes, we would help. We would help with security issues because that is a necessary factor in reaching an agreement,’ the president said.
Trump explained that the US peace plan is complex and includes ‘four or five different parts,’ one of which involves territorial division. He compared the process to ‘a thousand complex real estate deals,’ stressing that a settlement could stop the deaths of thousands of people every month.
‘In fact, apart from President Zelensky, everyone liked the concept of this agreement,’ he added.
He also confirmed that the United States is considering participating in a meeting on a peaceful settlement scheduled for Saturday in Europe.
‘We will be at the meeting on Saturday if we think there is a good chance. We don't want to waste time if it will have a negative outcome,’ he said, stressing that both Ukraine and European leaders insist on the US presence at the negotiating table.
Trump reiterated that support for Ukraine had cost the US hundreds of billions of dollars and stressed that Washington was not currently supplying weapons directly to Ukraine.
‘We sell NATO weapons at full price. They are already distributing them to Ukraine and others. But we are not involved in the war, except for negotiations,’ he said.
He also reiterated his achievements in increasing the defence spending of NATO member states:
‘They used to pay two per cent of GDP, now they pay five. And a significant portion of that money is coming back to the United States,’ Trump said.
