EU Leaders Gather in Copenhagen to Discuss Ukraine Support and Europe’s Defence

European Union leaders convened in Copenhagen on Wednesday for an informal summit focused on bolstering Europe’s collective defence and reaffirming long-term support for Ukraine as it resists Russia’s invasion.
The Gaze reports this, referring to the European Council’s press service.
The meeting, chaired by European Council President António Costa and hosted by Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, comes ahead of a formal European Council session scheduled for October 23–24.
Officials said leaders would lay the groundwork for concrete steps toward the EU’s “Defence Readiness 2030” strategy.
The summit comes against the backdrop of repeated Russian violations of EU airspace, which have sharpened calls for accelerated investment in defence capabilities.
Costa has urged more efficient use of funds, highlighting new tools such as the EU’s SAFE initiative to expand joint defence projects.
“As we invest more, we must also invest more efficiently and rationally, including through common tools like SAFE. Every euro should strengthen our common security and strategic autonomy,” he said.
Leaders will consider proposals to strengthen the eastern flank of the EU, including initiatives such as the “drone wall” – part of a broader “Eastern Flank Watch” project designed to counter threats from land, sea, and air.
In addition, today’s discussions will center on ensuring reliable economic, military, and political assistance to Ukraine, while pressing Russia with additional sanctions. Leaders are also expected to debate Kyiv’s reform efforts and progress on its path toward EU membership.
"To date, the EU and its member states have contributed over €173.5 billion in assistance to Ukraine. Following up on recent Coalition of the Willing meetings, the leaders will discuss how to continue supporting the Ukrainian armed forces as the primary guarantee of the country's sovereignty and security.,” the statement reads.
The roadmap for achieving Europe’s 2030 defence targets will be presented at the Council’s October session in Brussels.
As The Gaze reported earlier, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Tuesday announced an agreement with Ukraine on a €2 billion package to expand drone production.
