EU's Top Diplomat Kallas Warns Trump Against Backroom Deals with Putin on 'Peace'

The European Union's chief diplomat, Kaja Kallas, condemned US President Donald Trump's conversation with Russian leader Vladimir Putin on Thursday, saying that any agreement on Ukraine's future that is reached without European involvement will be impossible.

She told reporters on the sidelines of a meeting of NATO defence ministers.

 ‘It is clear that any agreement behind our back will not work. You need Europeans, you need Ukrainians,’ Callas said.

‘Why are we giving them (Russia) everything they want before the negotiations even begin? This is appeasement. It's never worked,’ she added.

Trump said on Wednesday that he had a ‘long and very productive phone call’ with Putin that morning, confirming that the two leaders had agreed to work together on a diplomatic solution to the war in Ukraine.

As reported by The Gaze, in January, Callas said that the number of sabotage attacks in Europe was on the rise and the EU should put pressure on Russia since it started the war in Ukraine.
