Indian summer is one of the meteorological wonders. This term is used to describe a period of unseasonably warm and dry weather that occurs during the fall. The term Indian summer has a rich history and a variety of theories about its origin. Some researchers believe that its appearance may have been inspired by Native American cultures that noticed this warm weather anomaly and incorporated it into their folklore. It was believed that these sunny, warm days of autumn were a gift from the spirits that allowed for an extra harvest before the onset of winter cold.

This phenomenon has other names as well, depending on the part of the world. For example, in the UK it is called “Old Wives' Summer”, and in the United States the term “Saint Martin's Summer” is used to refer to the warm period before November 11, when St. Martin's Day is celebrated.

For travellers, the period of Indian Summer means the beginning of the season when green leaves are already turning into incredibly beautiful golden decorations, and the air remains pleasantly warm and still reminds us of the summer that has already passed.

Warm autumn is considered to be one of the best periods for traveling, as the peak of the holiday season is over, there are fewer tourists, and the sun is not so hot and exhausting.

So, if your plans to catch the last rays of the sun this year are still being adjusted, we will tell you about some unique places where you can spend an unforgettable Indian Summer this fall.

Giethoorn, often called the 'Venice of the Netherlands', is a picturesque village in the province of Overijssel. There are no cars here and the main means of transport are waterways. The history of the village dates back to the end of the 13th century and the village takes its name from the goats (giet means ‘goat’) that roamed the area and the numerous horns (hoorn means ‘horn’) that were found here. Over the centuries, Giethoorn has remained relatively isolated, which has allowed it to retain its unique charm.

The best way to get to know Giethoorn is to take a canal trip. You can hire a traditional ‘whisper boat’ and glide along the canals. Take a guided tour of the charming thatched farmhouses, some dating back to the 18th century.

Nearby Githorn is the De Verribben-Wieden National Park, an unspoilt wetland area with magical flora and fauna. It's a great place for nature lovers, with opportunities for hiking, cycling and birdwatching.
