Former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, David Cameron, was officially appointed as the new Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs of the country on Monday. This announcement was made by the British government.

"The King was pleased to confirm the appointment of the distinguished David Cameron as the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Commonwealth, and Development. His Majesty was also pleased to confer upon David Cameron the lifelong title of Baron of the United Kingdom," Downing Street reported.

David Cameron will replace James Cleverly in this position, who has now become the Home Secretary. Cleverly, in turn, succeeded Suella Braverman as the head of the Home Office, who recently made controversial statements, including a high-profile article in which she accused the London police of bias in favor of pro-Palestinian protests.

"In these times of profound global changes for our country, it has never been more important to support our allies, strengthen our partnerships, and ensure that our voice is heard," commented David Cameron on his appointment.

David Cameron served as the 75th Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. He held this position from May 11, 2010, to July 13, 2016. At the time of his appointment, he became the youngest Prime Minister of the United Kingdom in 198 years.

During his tenure, Cameron championed the special status of the United Kingdom within the EU. In February 2016, during 40 hours of negotiations with the EU, he secured a special status for the UK in the European Union and the ability for his country not to fully pay migrants from other EU countries for the next seven years.

Cameron's leadership witnessed the Brexit referendum, in which 51.9% of the participants voted to leave the EU. After this, Cameron stepped down as Prime Minister and has been absent from the political life of the United Kingdom until now.

David Cameron maintains a consistent anti-Russian stance. In 2008, during the Russian-Georgian war, he called for visa sanctions against Russia and the suspension of its membership in the G8. In 2014, he also became one of the initiators of sanctions against Russia, which had invaded Ukraine and annexed Crimea.
