From 2024, Entry into Europe Will Require a Fee

Travel rules to Europe have been updated, and starting from 2024, Ukrainians and citizens of other countries with visa-free access to the European Union will need to obtain travel authorization before entering most European countries. This authorization will be obtained through the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) and will come with a mandatory entry fee.
The EU’s website provides details on the ETIAS travel permit, which is a mandatory requirement for visa-exempt travelers heading to any of the 30 European countries. The authorization will be linked to the traveler's passport and will remain valid for up to three years or until the passport's expiration date.
If you acquire a new passport, you will need to obtain a new ETIAS travel permit.
The processing fee for obtaining the ETIAS authorization is 7 euros per person. Travelers must apply for it at least 96 hours before their planned border crossing into the European Union, regardless of the mode of transport they intend to use.
Once issued, the ETIAS permit will allow multiple entries into European countries for short-term stays, typically up to 90 days within any 180-day period.
It's important to note that the ETIAS authorization is only required for short-term visa-free trips to the EU. If a person holds a visa or a residency permit, they do not need to apply for any additional authorization.
Most applications are processed within a few minutes, but it's advised that it may take longer. In some cases, decisions can be made within four days. However, this period may be extended to 14 days if additional information or documentation is requested, or up to 30 days if an interview is required.
Once you submit your application, you will receive a confirmation email containing your unique ETIAS application number, which you should keep for future use. After your application is processed, you will receive another email notifying you of the result.
If there's an error in your authorization, you will not be allowed to cross the border. In case your application is rejected, the email will provide reasons for the decision, and you will have the option to appeal.
ETIAS Checklist:
- Apply for the ETIAS travel authorization in advance, before buying tickets or making accommodation reservations.
- Ensure that the passport details match the information on your ETIAS permit, as you may be denied boarding and entry at the border if they do not match.
- Confirm the validity of your ETIAS travel permit and ensure that your passport is valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure from European countries requiring ETIAS.
It's currently unclear whether citizens of Ukraine, who have temporary protection status in EU countries, will require the ETIAS permit.
