Historical Jump by Ukrainian Yaroslava Mahuchikh Sets New World Record with 2.10m in Paris
Ukrainian high jumper Yaroslava Maguchykh has erased the previous world record of 2.09m, which stood for 37 years and was set by Bulgarian Stefka Kostadinova in Rome in 1987.
"Finally, I have written Ukraine into the history of world athletics," said Yaroslava Maguchykh.
Yaroslava Maguchikh, 22, and Nicola Olyaslagers, the world indoor champion, cleared 2.01m on their second attempt. After Olijaslagers failed three times at 2.03m, Maguchikh cleared this height to secure the victory.
She then cleared 2.07m, setting a Ukrainian record, and raised the bar to 2.10m, which she cleared on her first attempt.
Stefka Kostadinova, who held the previous record, commented to the Bulgarian NOC press service on the Ukrainian's historic achievement:
"I am glad that the world record in the women's high jump is now 210 cm. I was sure that this would happen one day. The achievement of Ukrainian Yaroslava Maguchikh is historic not only because she broke the record that had stood for 37 years, but also because these 210 cm prove that human capabilities are limitless and dispel the doubts of pessimists with their statements that some records in athletics will remain forever," she said.
