Hungary Confirms U.S. Intelligence on Planned Armed Provocation for Independence Anniversary
The Hungarian government has confirmed that it has received information from the United States about possible armed provocations during the 23 October rally marking the anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution.
This was reported by the press service of the Hungarian government, Telex reports.
According to Hungarian officials, last weekend, ‘Hungarian services received information from their American partners that young people in an online group were discussing a planned rally in the near future.’
They added that ‘the young people who organised the action planned to purchase and use weapons’, but there were no details on what steps had been taken in this regard.
‘Given the international events of recent months, when several leading politicians have been attacked with weapons, the Hungarian services and the Anti-Terrorist Centre pay special attention to verifying such information and taking the necessary measures,’ the Hungarian government said.
Earlier, it became known from diplomatic sources that about two weeks ago, Budapest learned from the US intelligence services about a possible armed provocation planned for 23 October, the day the Hungarian uprising against Soviet troops began in 1956.
According to media reports, several young men were detained near a pub in Budapest.
