Hungary Signs Agreement With Belarus to Help Build Nuclear Reactor
The Hungarian government has signed an agreement with Belarus to help build a second nuclear power plant in Hungary. This was announced the day before by Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto, who arrived in Minsk, Reuters reports.
The Russian company Rosatom has been building two reactors with a capacity of 1.2 gigawatts each in central Hungary since 2014.
‘The agreement signed in Minsk on cooperation in the field of nuclear energy allows us to use the experience of Belarus gained here in the construction of reactors with similar technology,’ Szijjarto said.
Hungary, which receives most of its electricity from Russia, opposes the extension of sanctions to the nuclear sector.
However, the €12.5 billion project to build reactors in Hungary has experienced long delays, even though nuclear energy is not subject to EU sanctions against Russia.
During Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine, the Hungarian Foreign Minister visited Belarus, which supports Russia in its war of aggression, several times.
As reported by The Gaze, at a meeting of EU ambassadors yesterday, 29 May, Hungary blocked the approval of the draft framework for negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU.
