The United States is moving closer to imposing a new round of secondary sanctions against Russia and its trading partners.

The Gaze writes about it, referring to Reuters and Fox Business.

The warning comes as a 10-day deadline Trump set for Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to expire on Friday, August 8.

In the meantime, the White House has already begun tightening economic pressure on countries that continue doing business with Russia.

On Wednesday, Trump announced a sharp escalation in trade measures, raising tariffs on select Indian imports by an additional 25%, with some duties reaching as high as 50% – a direct response to India’s ongoing purchases of Russian oil, which Washington views as undermining its sanctions regime.

China, which also imports significant quantities of Russian oil, has not yet been hit with similar measures. However, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently warned Chinese officials that failure to curb purchases of sanctioned Russian crude could result in steep tariffs, especially as Congress pushes forward with new legislation.

A senior administration official confirmed that preparations for broader secondary sanctions, targeting countries and companies that facilitate Russian energy exports, are still underway.

These measures are expected to be implemented as early as Friday unless Moscow signals a shift in its position on Ukraine.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio, speaking to Fox Business, said the final decision on sanctions would come “within the next 24 to 36 hours,” depending on the results of ongoing diplomatic efforts.

“A lot will depend on how the talks evolve,” Rubio stated, referring to the recent three-hour meeting in Moscow between Trump’s envoy, Steve Witkoff, and President Putin.
