International Conference 'Crimea Global: Understanding Ukraine through the South' Gathers Representatives from Over 25 Countries in Kyiv
Kyiv hosted the international three-day conference 'Crimea Global: Understanding Ukraine through the South,' organized within the framework of the Crimean Platform. The event brought together representatives from more than 25 countries around the world.
Over 300 participants from various expert, academic, and civil society backgrounds arrived in Ukraine, including individuals from India, Indonesia, Qatar, Malaysia, Nicaragua, Uruguay, Kenya, the Philippines, Turkey, Austria, Estonia, Italy, Argentina, Mexico, Colombia, Sudan, Chile, South Africa, Armenia, Brazil, Libya, Ghana, as well as opposition figures from the governments of Iran and Syria living outside their respective countries. Participants engaged both in-person and online, with 35 esteemed speakers contributing to panel discussions from Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
The conference comprised a total of nine discussion panels, and the outcomes of each served as a basis for further dialogue among representatives of countries from Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Ukraine. Topics addressed issues related to global energy and food security, human rights, decolonization, a new international order, international security, ensuring justice, and condemning Russian crimes on Ukraine's territory.
During side events, attendees discussed the impact of war and violence on women from different countries, the prosecution of criminals, and the restoration of justice concerning the most severe crimes committed in Ukraine and beyond. Additionally, conference participants visited the Child Rights Protection Center, where international guests gained insights into the violations of children's rights resulting from Russia's aggression against Ukraine and heard personal stories of children affected by the war.
The organizers expressed the belief that the exchange of ideas and experiences during the conference will significantly influence the further development of international relations, strengthen Ukraine's agency, and contribute to addressing global challenges. This is particularly relevant in the context of the confrontation between democratic forces and authoritarian regimes. The organizers look forward to the next meeting in free Ukrainian Crimea next year.
According to the conference organizers, this gathering has laid the groundwork for cooperation and the expansion of international relationships with Global South countries across various sectors.
Recall, the seizure and occupation of Crimea in Ukraine in 2014 became a part of Russian armed aggression.
