Latvia Lodges ‘Categorical Protest’ with Russia, Summons Ambassador over Drone Attack
The Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has summoned the Chargé d'Affaires of the Russian Embassy to express its categorical protest in connection with the Russian Shahed drone found in the Rezekne area on 7 September.
This was reported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Russian Charge d'Affaires was asked to provide a comprehensive explanation of the incident, during which the unmanned aerial vehicle illegally violated Latvian airspace and was equipped with explosives.
During the meeting, the Russian representative assured that he would inform the Russian Foreign Ministry about the situation.
It is noted that the responsible Latvian services continue to conduct an in-depth investigation into the circumstances of the incident. Latvia has informed its allies, the NATO and EU leadership, as well as its foreign ministry colleagues of the situation.
The leadership of the Latvian National Armed Forces has stated that the Russian drone that crashed in the country's Rezekne region was a Shahed drone packed with explosives, and its target was not Latvia but Ukraine.
As The Gaze previously reported, a Russian military drone crashed in eastern Latvia on 7 September. According to the country's Ministry of Defence, the drone flew into Latvian airspace from Belarus. The armed forces monitored its movement and identified the crash site.
