Latvia to Host Screening of Ukrainian Film 'Malevych'

On 8 June, Riga will host a screening of the historical biographical drama Malevych by Ukrainian director Daria Onyshchenko, as well as an exhibition of reproductions of the artist's works.
The Gaze reports on this with reference to the Ukrainian State Film Agency.
‘Malevych 360°‘ is one evening, three formats, a multidimensional look at the artist. Residents and guests of Riga will have a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the universe of Kazimir Malevych, an artist who left an indelible mark on the visual culture of the 20th century,’ the authors of the film noted.
During the event, which will take place at the Forum Cinemas in Riga, the film Malevych will be shown at 3 p.m., telling the story of the artist's life, his creativity, bold views and rebellion against the system.
The film will be shown in Ukrainian with subtitles in Latvian and English.
After the screening, at 5 p.m., viewers will be invited to an exhibition of reproductions and reconstructions of costumes for the opera Victory Over the Sun with an avant-garde atmosphere, large-format reproductions of iconic works and live allusions to the film.
In addition, at 6 p.m., there will be a lecture by Tetiana Filevska, during which the expert will reveal Ukrainian aspects of Malevych's biography and legacy — between history, philosophy and aesthetics.
The premiere of the film Malevych took place at the Munich Security Conference.
The biopic tells the story of Kazimir Malevych's struggle for artistic freedom and his opposition to the Soviet regime. It is a kaleidoscope of events from the life of the world-famous Ukrainian artist, who fights alone against totalitarian power for the right to create ‘free’ art.
