Lithuania Finds Debris of Russian Shahed-Type Kamikaze Drone

On the fifth day of the search in Lithuania, an unmanned aerial vehicle was found that had violated the country's airspace from Belarus on 28 July.

On Friday, 1 August, the unmanned aerial vehicle that flew from Belarus to Lithuania at the beginning of the week was found at the Gaizhnai training ground in the Jonava district.

This information was confirmed by Minister of National Defence Dovilė Šakalienė.

‘We confirm that the drone has been found. More detailed information will be provided in the near future,’ she said.

According to preliminary data, the unmanned aerial vehicle found is similar to a Russian Shahed-type drone. Military investigators and sappers were dispatched to the scene.

On the morning of 28 July, Lithuanians living near the border with Belarus notified the police that they could see and hear something resembling a drone. A video taken by one of the witnesses suggests that it was a Shahed-type aircraft. 

Shakaliene suggested that the drone could have flown into Lithuanian territory as a result of Ukrainian electronic warfare measures.

Lithuanian Armed Forces Commander Raimundas Vaikšnoras did not rule out the possibility that no drone had flown into the country and that the photos and videos had been taken in Ukraine.

On 29 July, due to the threat of drones, a special air defence unit was moved closer to the border with Belarus in Lithuania.

As The Gaze reported earlier, Lithuania wants to bring in extra air defence forces to protect its airspace after two incidents with drones flying into the country from Belarus.
