The Lithuanian Ministry of National Defence has signed a contract with Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace for the supply of NASAMS air defence missile systems. The contract is worth €193 million.
This was announced by the company, Mittler Report writes.
As part of the contract, Lithuania will also upgrade some of the NASAMS equipment that the country purchased in 2017.
‘Kongsberg sees a growing demand from existing NASAMS users to upgrade and increase the number of air defence systems,’ said Erik Lee, President of Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace.
‘The NASAMS system is an important defence capability given the geopolitical situation in the world. The contract with Lithuania also strengthens the country's partnership with NATO,’ he added.
It is reported that 13 countries currently use NASAMS systems.
According to the publication, the Lithuanian Ministry of Defence has also previously purchased NASAMS launchers for transfer to Ukraine.
NASAMS uses the advanced AIM-120 medium-range air-to-air missile in the surface-to-air mode. At the same time, the latest generation NASAMS can also launch shorter-range air-to-air missiles, such as the AIM-9X Sidewinder, from the ground.
