Macron-Trump Meeting: Ceasefire Agreement Between Russia and Ukraine Likely Within Weeks

During a meeting with US President Donald Trump, French President Emmanuel Macron urged the American president to ‘be careful’ in negotiating an end to Russia's war in Ukraine, Foxnews reports.
Macron stressed that any peace deal in Ukraine should not be a ‘surrender of Ukraine’ and should be backed by security guarantees.
The French president also told Fox News chief political anchor Bret Baier that he sees the possibility of a truce between Russia and Ukraine in the coming weeks.
‘A truce in the air, at sea [and] in infrastructure,’ the French president explained. ‘If it is not respected, it will be the best proof that Russia is not serious.’
Macron suggested that during the ceasefire, negotiations would take place on security guarantees, land, occupied territories, and reconstruction.
In turn, Le Monde called Macron's talks with Trump ‘a friendly dialogue between two deaf people’. The publication notes that while visiting Washington, the French president tried to influence the US position on the war in Ukraine, seeking security guarantees in the event of a ceasefire with Russia. But the US president did not make any commitments.
The Trump administration is currently working to finalise a deal with Ukraine on rare earth minerals, which it says will pay off tens of billions of dollars in aid that Washington has sent to Kyiv.
Tomorrow, on Wednesday, 26 February, French President Emmanuel Macron will brief other EU leaders on his talks with US President Donald Trump ahead of an emergency summit on European support for Ukraine. European Council President Antonio Costa, representing the bloc's 27 member states, told X that he had called a video conference with Macron to prepare for the leaders' talks on 6 March.
