Macron Urges US to Toughen Sanctions Against Russia

French President Emmanuel Macron is calling on the US to impose sanctions on Russia if it confirms that it is ‘not ready for peace.’
The Gaze reports on this with reference to BFMTV.
While in Singapore as part of his tour of Southeast Asia, Macron met with his Singaporean counterpart Lawrence Wong on the eve of the Shangri-La Dialogue, Asia's largest security and defence forum.
Responding to a question about Ukraine, and more specifically about the second round of negotiations to end the war between Ukraine and Russia, Macron called on Russia and the United States to take responsibility.
If Russia confirms that it is ‘not ready for peace,’ Washington must confirm its commitment to sanctions against Moscow, the French president told reporters during his visit to Singapore, stressing that ‘this is a test of trust for the Americans.’
‘I spoke with President Trump 48 hours ago, and he expressed his impatience. Now the question is, what do we do about it? We (Europeans. – Ed.) are ready,’ he added.
Regarding the European position on the ceasefire, the French president confirmed that Europeans deserve trust. ‘They are consistent and reliable [...] We have not changed, we still believe in international order, cooperation, open trade and respect for the rules,’ he also said.
Against the backdrop of recent statements by the Russian Federation and its intensification of air terror against Ukraine, US President Donald Trump previously stated that he was considering imposing additional sanctions against Russia.
But Trump recently said he would refrain from imposing sanctions against Russia if he believed it could ‘ruin’ the conclusion of an ‘agreement.’
As The Gaze reported earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron announced that France supports imposing new sanctions on Russia ‘in the coming days’ if Moscow does not agree to implement a ceasefire in its war against Ukraine, The Gaze reports, citing Reuters.
