The EU has only used the income from these funds.

The Gaze reports on it according to European Truth.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz has agreed to grant The EU has frozen large amounts of Russian state assets. Most of these funds are held by the Belgian financial company Euroclear.

Until now, the EU has only used the income from these funds to finance a $50 billion loan to Ukraine.

Germany has long argued that the €185 billion held by Euroclear should be used first. In Germany itself, a much smaller amount has been frozen. The German government keeps the exact figure secret, but according to German media estimates, it is around €200 million.

This was reported to the DPA agency by sources in Brussels, where the EU leaders' summit is currently taking place, according to European Truth.

Belgium did not want to take the risk of becoming a target for possible Russian retaliatory measures.

Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever stated that he insisted on three conditions for the use of Russian assets, including the use of frozen Russian assets located in other countries for reparations loans.

According to DPA, Merz promised at the summit in Brussels to grant access to Russian assets in Germany.

As noted, this is the first time the German chancellor has so clearly expressed his position. However, the publication emphasises that this was to be expected, as it is Merz who is most actively promoting the idea of a ‘reparation loan’ for Ukraine in Europe.

The media previously reported that after the first negotiations at the EU summit, German government circles were optimistic that the heads of state and government would agree on the use of frozen Russian assets for the benefit of Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky insists that it is more profitable for Europe to help Ukraine financially, because otherwise the risk of the war spreading to the EU increases dramatically.
