Romania Officially Denies Bloomberg’s Claims of US Pressure to Allow Far-Right Candidate to Run for President

The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs says that there have been no discussions or ‘interventions regarding the candidate or the electoral process in Romania’ in bilateral interactions with US administration officials, G4media and digi24 report.
The ministry's reaction came after the US media outlet Bloomberg published, citing anonymous sources, that the Donald Trump administration was putting pressure on Romania not to block the participation of far-right pro-Russian candidate Kelin Georgescu in the 4 May presidential election.
‘I have heard public statements by some representatives of the US administration at the Munich Security Conference and in social media posts. Beyond these general statements, there have been no discussions or interventions in bilateral interactions with US administration officials about the candidate or the electoral process in Romania. Romania and Europe remain firmly committed to democracy and freedom of expression.
‘A united EU, a stronger NATO and a stronger transatlantic partnership are in our common interest,’ the Foreign Ministry said in a press release, also referring to recent statements by J.D. Vance.
Earlier, at the Munich Security Conference last Friday, US Secretary of State J.D. Vance said that the cancellation of the presidential election in Romania was based on ‘flimsy suspicions’ of intelligence services, and that the decision was a sign that Europe has ‘bigger internal problems’ than ‘the threat of Russia or China’.
In his turn, billionaire Elon Musk, who heads the Department of Government Effectiveness (DOGE) in the team of US President Donald Trump, posted a message on his X network about the political situation in Romania, based on a statement by far-right pro-Russian politician Kelin Georgescu.
