‘Second Wind’: Film on Ukrainian War Heroes’ Kilimanjaro Climb Debuts in Washington
A powerful new documentary, Second Wind, has been screened in Washington, D.C., telling the story of Ukrainian veterans who, despite life-changing injuries, climbed Africa’s highest mountain to demonstrate courage, resilience, and the unbreakable spirit of their nation.
The Gaze reports this, referring to Ukrinform.
The film premiered at the Embassy of France in the U.S. capital, with the support of the Embassy of Ukraine. It follows five Ukrainian defenders who fought in Russia’s war against Ukraine and later took on one of the world’s toughest physical challenges, ascending Mount Kilimanjaro.
Among the participants are Roman “Dobriak” Kolesnyk, Vladyslav “Shatia” Shatilo, Mykhailo “Hrizli” Matviiv, and Oleksandr “Ragnar” Mikhov, all of whom underwent amputations and now use prosthetic limbs.
They were joined by Olha “Vysota” Yehorova, who sustained shrapnel injuries during her service. The journey is told largely through Yehorova’s perspective, showing the intense physical and emotional preparation required to reach the summit.
Director Mariia Kondakova said the film’s mission is to inspire soldiers who return to civilian life after severe wounds to rediscover purpose and strength. “We wanted to help veterans find their ‘second wind’ and to show society how to interact with them – not through pity, but with respect and gratitude,” she explained.
Ukraine’s Ambassador to the United States, Olha Stefanishyna, who attended the screening, said the film helps Americans understand the meaning of freedom through the example of Ukraine’s defenders. “This story shows why their support matters,” she said. “These men and women, even after losing their legs, carried the spirit of freedom to the top of Kilimanjaro.”
The film will also be shown in New York later this week before traveling to other major cities worldwide. Its Kyiv premiere took place on October 8, earning wide praise for its emotional storytelling and stunning cinematography.
As The Gaze previously reported, the Ukrainian short film “Soldier” directed by Danylo Dedkov has won the award for Best Short Film at the 3rd International Ukrainian Film Festival PTAKH in the United Kingdom – an event dedicated to showcasing films by Ukrainians and stories about Ukraine to British and international audiences.
