Slovak PM Fico Accused of High Treason by Opposition Over Visit to Putin; No-Confidence Motion Planned
Robert Fico committed high treason by meeting with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. Such harsh words were spoken the day before by the head of the strongest opposition movement, Progressive Slovakia, Michal Šimečka, according to Aktuality.
At a press conference, he criticised the Slovak prime minister for running to ‘foreign dictators’ instead of solving problems, thus tearing Slovakia away from its EU and NATO allies.
Opposition parties are considering calling an extraordinary meeting to express no confidence in Roberto Fico's government. Fico's trip to Moscow could even threaten his government. Progressive Slovakia and the Freedom and Solidarity party are considering calling a meeting in parliament to express no confidence in Robert Fico's cabinet. Just a few months ago, this would have been a futile attempt by the opposition, which would have been swept off the table by the 79-member coalition. Today, under certain circumstances, such a vote could mean the end of the government's cabinet.
The day before, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also said that Prime Minister Fico wants to help Putin make money for the war.
‘We are fighting for our lives, Fico is fighting for money, and hardly for money for Slovakia. Shadowy agreements with Putin are either trading in state interests or working for his own pocket,’ Zelenskyy said.
‘We gave him a proposal for possible compensation for the Slovaks - specifically for the Slovaks - for losses from Russian transit, and for transit alternatives - any other gas, not Russian, at the request of the European Commission. We were ready to do this. Fico did not want compensation for the Slovaks. And he does not want to cooperate with the European Commission. For some reason, it is more profitable for him in Moscow. Everyone in Europe understands why. There are no those who do not understand,’ the Ukrainian president added.
