Spain, Portugal, and France Suffer Major Blackouts: Ukraine Offers Help

On April 28, massive blackouts struck Spain, Portugal, and parts of France, causing widespread disruption across key sectors. The outages affected public transportation systems, airports, traffic lights, hospitals, and partially disrupted mobile communication networks, The Gaze reports.
The cause of the incident remains under investigation. However, local media sources have pointed to potential issues within the broader European power grid, which appear to have destabilized national grids across the Iberian Peninsula.
In response to the crisis, Ukraine’s Minister of Energy, Herman Halushchenko, announced that Ukraine is ready to assist in restoring the stable operation of Europe’s energy systems.
“Ukraine is ready to help restore the stable operation of the energy grids of our partners and allies in Europe. We are ready to share the knowledge and experience gained, particularly during the systematic Russian attacks on our own energy infrastructure,” Halushchenko said. “We are grateful to the EU countries for their support and are always ready to help!”
Ukraine has significant experience in handling large-scale blackouts, especially following repeated Russian strikes on its energy infrastructure in autumn 2022 and summer 2024. Despite devastating attacks that targeted power plants and transmission lines, Ukraine successfully implemented rapid restoration measures and strengthened grid resilience through emergency repairs and strategic energy management.
Authorities in Spain, Portugal, and France are continuing to assess the full extent of the damage and the causes behind the outages, while urgent efforts are underway to fully restore power and ensure the stability of essential services.
