The Swiss Federal Government intends to deepen its cooperation with the North Atlantic Alliance, specifically by involving conscripted soldiers in joint training missions and reviewing the rules for the transit of foreign military forces through its territory. This information is outlined in the Swiss government's report on strengthening security, presented to the country's parliament on January 31, as reported by Swissinfo.
In the presented parliamentary report, the executive branch of the Swiss government emphasizes its commitment to a longstanding policy of neutrality but retains the right to form necessary military alliances in the event of an attack. The document specifically highlights the need to establish a legal framework for such actions while considering the principles of neutrality. In this context, the Swiss Federal Council proposes to enhance cooperation with NATO in the defense sector.
"Switzerland has largely imposed current restrictions on itself, so it must either abandon them or at least adapt them within the framework of neutrality law," states the report.
The Swiss government also asserts the importance of avoiding any commitments, dependencies, or limitations that could compromise the country's neutrality.
It is noteworthy that after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Swiss authorities and society lean towards strengthening security cooperation, particularly with the North Atlantic Alliance. Switzerland is already a participant in NATO's "Partnership for Peace" program and last year entered into an agreement for collaboration within this initiative.
However, the international community criticizes Switzerland for its position on the prohibition of re-exporting weapons that could be used to counter Russian aggression against Ukraine. Currently, Switzerland provides Ukraine with only humanitarian assistance and non-military technical support, including demining.
The Gaze reported that during the official visit of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to Switzerland on Monday, January 15, Swiss President Viola Amherd emphasized Switzerland's unwavering solidarity with Ukraine. In turn, President Zelensky thanked Switzerland for its support and sympathy for Ukraine's plight, adding that neutrality for Switzerland does not mean ignoring reality.
