The EU demands explanations from Hungary regarding its involvement in the liberation of Ukrainian prisoners of war from Russia
The European Union demands an explanation from Hungary regarding its involvement in the liberation of Ukrainian military detainees from Russia, as well as its communication with the Ukrainian government on this matter.
Delfi reports, citing a comment from Peter Stano, the spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy of the European Commission. He stated that Russia must adhere to its obligations under international humanitarian law and ensure humane treatment of prisoners of war under all circumstances in accordance with the Geneva Conventions. It should not endanger their lives.
"As for Hungary, its authorities must explain the details and their involvement in the release of Ukrainian citizens held by Russia as prisoners of war, as well as Hungary's communication on this matter with the Ukrainian government," said Stano.
Earlier, it became known that the Russian Orthodox Church wants to transfer 11 Ukrainian prisoners of war to Hungary, a decision that was not coordinated with Ukraine.
The transfer of the military personnel allegedly took place at the request of the Hungarian side. However, the exact number of Ukrainian soldiers transferred to Hungary by the Russian Orthodox Church has not been specified.
On June 9, Hungary confirmed the receipt of prisoners from Russia and stated that the Russian Orthodox Church had transferred a group of Ukrainian prisoners of war from Zakarpattia to the country.
Subsequently, the Hungarian ambassador was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine regarding this incident. The Ukrainian side has requested detailed information about its citizens and immediate access for a Ukrainian consul to provide them with consular assistance and assess their health condition.
As of June 19, Ukrainian diplomats have not yet been granted access to the prisoners in Hungary. They may be held in isolation without access to open sources of information. Therefore, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs demands that the consul be allowed to visit the prisoners to assess their condition and provide consular assistance.
